Samsung Electronics Reorganizes to Fight Slump

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Samsung Electronics Co. announced a major restructuring Friday, consolidating business operations into two divisions as South Korea's most powerful and iconic corporation deals with the slowing global economy and expectations of looming red ink.The new organization was included in an announcement of personnel changes at the company as well as at the broader Samsung Group of which it serves as flagship. Samsung Electronics CEO Lee Yoon-woo, who retains his position, will also take on the added responsibility of overseeing a new Device Solution division combining the semiconductor and LCD businesses, according to the announcement. The company also plans a Digital Media and Communications division to be headed by Choi Gee-sung, bringing together under one umbrella televisions, mobile phones and other consumer electronics such as printers, computers and home appliances, according to Samsung spokesman James Chung. Samsung Electronics is the world's biggest manufacturer of memory chips, liquid crystal displays and flat screen televisions. It ranks second behind Finland's Nokia Corp. in mobile phones. The company, however, has been struggling of late amid the global downturn and falling prices for semiconductors and flat screens. Its net profit declined 44 percent in the third quarter of 2008 from the same period in 2007. Samsung is scheduled to announce fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 23 and some analysts are forecasting the company will swing to a net loss. ''We needed to effectively respond to the current global recession,'' Samsung spokeswoman Hwang Eun-ju said regarding the reason for the changes. She also said that Samsung will cut the pay of top executives by up to 20 percent. The conglomerate-wide personnel changes are the second since the resignation in April of Lee Kun-hee as chairman of Samsung Electronics, the post from where he oversaw the entire Samsung Group. The position of Samsung chairman remains unfilled. Lee Yoon-woo, the current CEO, assumed that position in May, in line with other personnel movements. Samsung Electronics also reshuffled some of its businesses at that time though not on the scale announced Friday. Lee Kun-hee, the figure credited with building Samsung into a global force, resigned after being indicted on charges of tax evasion, for which he was eventually convicted and handed a suspended prison sentence. He was acquitted on separate breach of trust charges. Besides Samsung Electronics, the conglomerate consists of dozens of companies with interests in shipbuilding, construction, life insurance and leisure. The group is said to account for about 20 percent of South Korea's exports. A total of 25 executives were affected by the personnel changes at group companies, including 14 promotions, Samsung said. ''A new wave of young talent was chosen to overcome the global downturn,'' Samsung said in the statement. Samsung's semiconductor and mobile phone businesses in recent years under the direction of two key executives -- Chang Hwang-gyu, dubbed ''Mr. Chip'' by local media, and Lee Ki-tae, known as ''Mr. Phone'' -- focused on putting the company at the forefront of technological innovation. Hwang, most recently chief technology officer, and Lee, vice chairman for external relations, left those positions Friday, according to Chung, the spokesman. Their departure signals a new focus. ''This means Samsung's strategy is moving from high-tech competition to profitability,'' said Lee Min-hee, an analyst at Dongbu Securities. Lee said he expects Samsung to record a net loss for the final three months of 2008, which he said would be the company's first on a quarterly basis. Shares in Samsung Electronics rose 2.1 percent to close at 469,000 won ($345.42) Friday. Samsung's share price fell 19 percent in 2008.

It has been quite a while since I update this blog. Well, the truth is I have been really busy with my study and work> Now I have come to another cycle of my live. I will graduate next year February, and until now I haven't had a solid plan for the future. There are few options out there, but they are still unsure. Especially with the current bad condition. However, as one of my friends in church told me, "God is in control". I really believe that, and looking back I have seen how great His works are. Supposedly there's no need for me to feel afraid...but still I can't resist to be afraid and worried...

It's been for quite sometimes that I haven't write about technology. Well writing about technology is one of my hobby, so I always try to write about it. As you may all know that Apple has just recently held their special event call "Let's rock", and it's exactly at the same date as my birthday...^^
A few products that they release is the new iTunes 8 (with Genius addition), the iPod classic, the second iPod touch, and of course what I like most is the new iPod nano.
The iPod classic was upgraded from 80Gb to 120Gb for the same price. The most obvious change for iPod nano is the wide screen and the long oval design. I have been using my sister's in law iPod nano, and my complaint is always the small screen. And another addition of shake to shuffle, that enable you to shuffle songs by just shaking the ipod with the addition accelerometer built in the iPod nano. And of course a lot of new colors called the nano chromatic with all the 8Gb and 16Gb model. The iPod touch now comes with thinner packaging, the same design as the iPhone 3G has and it has volume rocker, speaker and Nike plus all built-in the new iPod touch...Again, some amazing great products by Apple...

Today is a very unique day, August 8th 2008. The Chinese believe that 8 is a lucky number, that's why tonight at 08:08pm, they are going to open the 2008 Olympic games. Some people might have chosen these date as their special day, mostly maybe their wedding date, just like last year when we had the 070707. Some people bought car plate number or mobile phone number or any thing that contain a lucky number (or in Indonesia we called it "Nomor cantik/bautiful number").
Some people also think there are unlucky numbers like 4 or 13. And sometimes they avoid this number, like in some building they change the 4th floor to 3A and 3B or 13th floor to 12A and 12B.
But do you really think that these numbers can give you prosperity or change your luck?

This week, starting from Monday-Wednesday, I went to SK Academy-Yongin city for the summer SK Global internship program orientation. In this orientation all of the interns from all SK groups from SK energy, SK telecom, and other SK company, are joined here to have orientation to know more about SK as a group. I really had a great time here, and I met a lot of new friends from all over the world. In my group especially (picture above-details can be seen here), we are all from different whole other countries; Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Phillipine, China, Germany, USA, Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, Sweden, Rusia, Kazakhstan, Irak, Pakistan, Netherland, And Turki...
There are a few lectures that we attended, but one special lectures was given by the CEO of Harley Davidson Korea. He explain about how "spirits in a product" is a very important factor. And also about passion which comes from the latin word "Pasus=pain", which means that passion is something that will change your life but it comes with a price. Another thing that I learned was about SUPEX-Super Excellent. Supex is the SK-way of promoting the excellence in SK people to achieve their maximum potential in their work. And I think it is a unique word, and has a very deep meaning in it.
Beside the lectures, we also had some other fun activities, like sports, body and mind training, hiking, and also wathing the SK wyverns baseball game.
I think I will be enjoying my time here for the next 5 weeks in this internship program...

Last Thursday we went for our summer lab-membership training. This time we went to Juwangsan National park for hiking and fishing. We went there Thursday morning. It took 2hours to get to the national park. On the first day, we went to view the lake and fishing on a river. Unfortunately there wasn't many fishes there, so we could only caught 3small fishes. And then we went back to a small lodge to spent the night there.
The next day we went hiking for almost 6 hours in Juwangsan national park. It was a beatiful view the mountains, forrest and waterfalls.

ISASC2008 conference - Jeju island

For the last 4 days, I have been away to Jeju island for a conference. This is my first time to be in Jeju island. In case you don't know, Jeju island (제주) is this small beautiful island on the southern most part of Korea, it's about 1 hour of flight from Daegu.
I went there with my professor (Dr. Yoon, Dang-Hyok), my lab mate (Lee, Jong hyon), and another professor and 2 other of my schoolmate. The conference is located in Hyatt hotel just beside a cliff with amazing view of the island.

We came there on Sunday afternoon (8th June) for the registration and the welcome party. I saw a lot of expert in the ceramics field, especially in Si-based material being invited there to present their works. We collected our batched and meal coupons, and it turned out that I was representing Korea, well that make sense since I represent my work under the university's name.

My presentation was on Tuesday afternoon. I was very nervous, since I was the only presenter who are not even hold a master degree yet. All presenter have at least a "phd" title with their name. I was so nervous that I couldn't really enjoy the beautiful scenery, the fresh air, and anything on the first 2 days of our trip. But as the schedule goes on, and as I presented my paper, which I think it turn out not too bad, I slowly can enjoy the beauty of Jeju island. Right after my presentation ended, I went out of the conference hall to feel and embrace the beautiful and the fresh air.

It was an amazing 4 days trip for me. Too bad I can't spend much time to see the attractions that Jeju has to offer. But still I did have the famous food (Hek-Dweji and seafood platter) and visited the Seogwipo resort, the botanical garden, some of the beaches and more a long the way from the airport to the Hotel. But there are actually tremendous amount of interesting places that you can see in this island. Well anyway, it was a really fun and interesting trip. And by the way, the seafood platter that i was talking about earlier, the shell fish is still alive when it was served in our table but it was deliciousssssss....

Baseball

This is my first time to watch a baseball game, and I dun really know the rules actually. But I played before in a video games, so basically I understand a bit about the game. And it was actually an exciting games to watch. No wonder a lot of people liked it.

The game yesterday was between Samsung Lions (Daegu) vs. SK (Seoul). We don't really know the players but it was just so exciting to cheers for our Daegu team. There were also some entertainment during the game.

Like any other game it's all started with the national anthem. This is also my first time to listen to Korean national anthem.

ISASC 2008 Conference

문경새재 (Munkyong seje)

문경새재 (red: Munkyongseje) is one of the famous Korean National park. This place is one of the most important historical places in Korea. I was amaze by the amazing scenery in this place, it was one of the most beautiful place I have ever seen. The first thing you will notice is the entrance gate with a green mountainous backdrop.

And then inside there is this village which was actually made for a movie shooting, however the view was awesome, it was like you are going back to the past. You can see different type of houses from the royal family, the rich family and also the poor villages.

I think Indonesia has also a lot of historical places that can actually be upgraded to make it more attractive...

Sunyang Masai marathon 2008-Daejon

This is the most unique marathon or even the most unique sport race I have ever joined in my life. The 2008 Masai Marathon was taken place at Daejon, around 3hours drive from Daegu. My Korean teacher initiate the idea of joining this race, so most of all my Korean class friend went there. We arrive there just before the race start, around 10am.
What was so unique about this race, one might ask. First of all the race is in a mountain road, which means, it was a small pathways with uphill and downhill and also thousands of people. So its not the normal asphalt road.

Second of all all the participants are advised not to wear any footwear, so you have to be bare-feet.

The participants was not only marathon fans or runners or athletes, but it was for everyone. Whether you are man, woman, children or oldman; from Korea, USA, Japan, Indonesia, India etc; whether you even disable people join this marathon

As usual, in any normal marathon, they have some sort of pit stop or a check points where you can have waters and some food. In this marathon we also have checkpoints, but not only water and food, there are also live musics. But not only that, there also a view performances like dances and traditional korean folk song, and all these are during the marathon.

Beside that, you also have a mud road along the way. I'm not really sure what's the reason they made this road. But it was fun.

At the finishing line, there are also cheerleaders shouting "Hwaiting...hwaiting...". a Korean way to encourage people.

After the race we got our medal, in the form of a foot made of wood, which is very unique. And then we also receive a Souvenir including 2 bottles of Soju (Korean traditional Alcohol drink). And we can enjoy a Soju cocktail after the race while watching some performances.

ionman...ooopss i mean Ironman

One of the most anticipated movie this year, "Ironman" really blow me off. It's one of the best movie i watched since transformers. The story was simple yet interesting, the graphic was awesome especially when you watched in a huge imax screeen and the best of course the gadgets. The movie is like porn to gadget lover. The best part is when Tony Stark puts on his iron man suit...awesome!!

My friend's wedding

Yesterday I went to my ex-lab mate wedding ceremony. I went there with my professor and his family. As usual his 2 children, David and Chisu, was joining us to the ceremony. I always love to play with them, even though sometimes i don't understand their words. We were playing in the car all the way from our place to the Wedding hall.
This is my first time to see a Korean wedding ceremony. The wedding was more to international wedding than to Korean traditional wedding. One thing that I found really special and unique is the wedding car. It was the Mini cabriolet decorated with flowers....Awesome...

인도네시아는 크고 아름다운 나라 입니다. 인도네시아에는 큰 섬들이 많이 있습니다. 많은 유명하고도 재미있는 장소들고 있습니다. 지금부터 인도네시아에서 가장 유명한 물건들고 장소들을 소개하겠습니다.

먼저 인도네시아의 전통의상 바띡 천과 끄바야 소개하겠습니다. 바띡 천과 끄바야는 인도네시아 여성들이 즐겨 입는 옷입니다. 인도시에서는 많은 여성들이 일상복으로 서양식의 옷을 입습니다. 하지만 파티나 중요한 모임에는 바띡 천이나 끄바야를 입고 갑니다.

다음 인도네시아의 수도 소개하겠습니다. 자카르타는 인도네시아의 수도이고 자바 섬에 있습니다. 이 도시는 인도네시아 다른 도시들보다 크고 붐빕니다. 붐비는 시간에 많은 차들이 가고 있어서 길이 막힙니다. 자카르타의 인구는 천 만 명 정도입니다. 자카르타에는 큰 백화점이 많습니다.

발리는 세계에서 가장 아름다운 섬입니다. 발리는 천국의 섬 이라고 불립니다. 발리섬은 이미 오래 전부터 관광지로 주목되어 왔으며, 지금 많은 사람이 찾아듭니다.천국의 섬인 발리는 재미없는 곳이 없습니다. 아름다운 바다고 큰 절이 많습니다. 그래서 많은 한국 사람들은 발리에 신혼 여행 갑니다.

인도네시아 사람은 대개 영어를 못합니다. 그래서 인도네시아어를 할수 있어야 합니다.

봄 축제 (Spring Festival)

이본주에 실홈 하고 숙제 많아요.그래서 너무 바빠요. 이년 여름에 제주도에소 협의는 있어서 재 교수님은 바른 실험 하고 싶어요. 매일 9시부터 6시까지 실험실에서 열심히 실험헤요. 다음 금요일에 긴급한 실험 있으면 한국어 수업 멏 갔어요.

토요일 아침에 10시 일어났어요. 그리고 실험실 갔어요. 점심 식사 후에 진구들랑 같이 봄 축제에 갔어요. 축제에서 갔으면 많이 사람은 왔어요. 그리고 같이 사랑길 갔어요. 사랑길에서 너무 아름다운 벚꽃 성장해요. 기분은 좋아요.

봄에 채일 좋아요. 날씨가 도운 도 춥지않아요. 어늘은 일요일마다 교희에 가요.

Last week i was so busy with my project and other stuff. However last Saturday we had a spring festival here in campus. Spring is the most beautiful period here in Korea. The weather is not so cold nor so hot, and also with all the cherry blossoms growing all over the campus. It was so beautiful day. Too bad the cherry blossoms only last for about 2weeks or so...

오늘은 한국어 첫수업이 있어요. 수업은 매일 여섯시 부터 다섯시 까지 해요. 궁국 학생은 많아요,그렇지만 다른 외국인 도 있어요. 네팔 학생 하고 우즈벡 학생하고 있어요. 저는가 인도네시아 하그생 이에요. 제생각에 이본 학기 한국어 수업은 재미있을 것 같아요, 왜냐하면 회화 하고 듣기 가 많아요. 그리고 선생님이 좋아요.

It has been more than one month since the latest update of this blog. I have been quite busy recently with my project during weekdays and also with church activities during weekend. So I can't really spare time to update this blog. I was actually rushing to speed up all my experiment so that I can cover the two weeks where I will be in Indonesia. Oh yah...I will be home tomorrow to see my baby delivery. My wife's due is supposed to be this week, so we will have a new member in our little family.
Anyway, I will need to submit a Journal by this summer for the Ceramics conference in Jeju Island. My abstract was already accepted and I will be doing oral presentation on that conference this summer. To do that I will need to complete all my experiment and get my data before the Journal submission due. That's why I was so busy...
During weekend I spent most of my time in church. Since now I'm in charge of the slides, Bulletins and the church homepage. And starting last Sunday, I'm also involve in small group leader. Yesterday was our first small groups meeting. I'm really grateful for my group, they are all really active in the discussion even though all of us comes from different country, culture and background. Anyway, I will be in Indonesia for the next 2weeks...

새해 복 많이 받으세요 ( Happy new year)

Its holiday today in Korea, actually it started from yesterday until end of this week.It's the Lunar new year or some say Chinese New year or xinnien or we called in sincia or imlek in Indonesia. In Korea, it becomes Korean New year or Solnal (설닐 pronouce seollal). This is one of the biggest holiday in Korea after 추석 (Chusok) or the Korean thanks giving day. Just like in Singapore, between this period of time everywhere becomes like a ghost town, very quite and no stores open. Because everyone spend their time with their family. The situation is almost like "lebaran" or idul fitri in Indonesia.
Speaking of that, Lebaran actually celebrate the Islamic new year also. So the strange thing is that, in Singapore people thought that the Chinese celebrate Chinese new year, The Moslem's celebrate the Islamic new year, and the Christian celebrate the calender new year....hmmm.....

Why not Mini or Nano?

When Apple came out with its shrinkage iPod model, they named it iPod-mini, and then continued with iPod-nano. Similar to its shrinkage Mac-desktop, which they called Mac mini. It seems that over the last decade, Mr. Jobs always make a pattern on their product range. And this is the first one with the "Air" sub-name product.
I myself have not seen this little Apple wonder in person. But from a lot of pictures and video that I saw, I'm really impress on how Apple able to squeeze all the technology inside the thin aluminum case. But i'm really dissapointed with the choice of color in the keyboard, why black?It's like the old titanium PowerBook. However I do like the keyboard layout and the fact that they include backlit in this product.
Overall with the same budget I prefer to have the 15inch Macbook Pro, since I'm not so much a travel person, and I will enjoy the wide 15inch screen more than the Macbook Air Portability.
Again if the next thing is "Air", would we expect any more "Air" from Apple?I'm thinking of iPhone Air...

Snowboarding

Yesterday me and all the ceramics dept went for our annual winter MT (Membership training)2008. This winter we went to Muju Resort for ski and snow boarding. The night before we went there, I was actually feeling unwell. I think it was because of the Road-rally last Sunday. Anyway I thought that I won't miss this change.
We gathered in campus at 5am in the morning. It took about 2.5 hours from our campus to Muju resort by bus. We arrived there around 830am, and it was so exciting to see the town full of snow. When we arrived there, first we went to the rental to rent our ski and snowboard equipment. All of the student take snowboard, I was actually want to choose ski because I played ski before, however since all student choose snowboard, I have no choice but to choose snowboard even though I have no confidence with snowboard.

After we rent of the equipment, we directly went to the course. Since this is the first time for me to play snowboard, I have to learn everything even how to use all the gear. I was wondering why do we need to use protection in our buttocks but not on my elbow, but I just use it for the sake of protection. The first thing that we need to learn is how to balance ourself on the board, and after that we need to learn how to stop the board from sliding by using our feet to tilt the board. It takes me quite sometimes to learn these 2, and when you fall, your buttocks hit first that's why we have to use protection there. Once I master this, it was quite fast for me to learn the next lesson, the sliding, toe slide, back slide, and turning. However I have to fell down so many times until I really enjoy snowboarding.I found out that it was easier for me to play snowboard than ski and I think snowboard is more fun.

I felt really tired after 8 hours of snowboarding. We end our session at around 5pm and we went to the resort to rest and have our dinner. We had samgyopsal for dinner and as usual the dinner was full of "soju" and "mekju". Because I was too tired I went to bed early and since the next day we still have hiking.
Today we went for hiking at Deogyu mountain-딕규산. The mountain was full with snow, and it was extremely cold on top. However it was a very beautiful scenery. I was actually about not to join them hiking because I was too tired, but I can't resist when I first saw the scenery. It took us about an hour to reach the top and we took some pictures and enjoy the scenery. I can't even feel my pain when I was there, it was too beautiful to missed....

Last Sunday, we had our winter outdoor activities in church. This winter we did the "Dongshin 2008 Road-rally". This road rally basically have the same concept as "The Amazing Race", where we were given clues and we need to go places to find out the answers of each clues. In our case, we need to go around Daegu city and take pictures of every clues that we solved. We had 3 hours to complete the mission and each group consist of 4 people with one car. One person act as the El-capitan, which is the leader of the group and also in-charge in driving. The second person is the Navigator, which is incharge of the clues and read it to the whole member. The third person is the treasurer, which is in-charge of the 50.000won money that we need to spend during the race. The last person is the...i forgot the name, but he/she in-charge of the documentation of the whole journey.
We start the race at 4pm from church. My group has 4 persons, Ryan's the El-capitan is driving. We start our race by buying coffees and ask for stamps, and than we went to buy kimbab and give it to stranger, and then we went to convenience store and ask the storekeeper for his/her phone number. The next trip we went to E-mart to find the cheapest thing and to buy a bread. The next clues ask us to go to a cinema and ask for posters and signed by the employees there. Then we went downtown area, woobang amusement park, and last we went to apsan park. It was a long way to go, because the whole journey we have to run to save time. The other funny thing is that we have to change our clothes, and also we need to spray 6times of tested cologne which makes me dizzy through out the whole journey, and also we need to get a "un-holly water" from a toilet...yukssss....We also need to buy a packed of gums and chew it all, and keep the chewed gum in the contained..hahahhaha...
Our group was the first one to complete the mission, but we lost points because we cannot solve one mystery which is the "world cup stadium" and we can only get 3rd place. It was a fun and exciting journey throughout the race even though it was snowy and raining and the weather was extremely cold. But we were very satisfied with our result and the most important thing is that we have done our best.

This new year is special for me, but not really in a good way cause this is the first time I spent my new year alone. But thanks to all my friend here, I can spent my new years eve with a lot of fun. Me and the gyeongsaners took a trip to Busan to meet some of our Indonesian friend there. This is my first time to be in Busan. In Busan we were invited to a lovely dinner in Pukyong University with Bro Lilik and Bro Dicky as the host. After that we went to "Nore-Bang" and enjoy our time there with all the Busan-ers. And then we took a walk to the Busan bridge, however it was avery cold night, so we went back quite early. Overall it was a great trip, I hope I can go there again someday...

It is almost end of the year, in 2more days we will come to a brand new year, 2008. We have passed through 365 days in 2007. We might have experienced a lot during this year. Good things, bad things, blessings or even struggle for something, whatever that is we have passed through it. Now it's time for us to look back and not regret for what we have or what we have done, instead we need to be thankful and be grateful for those.

For myself, this year has been the most amazing year for me. This year is like a turning point for me to start brand new life. First of all, this year I was married to a great, wonderful, amazing, lovely, and faithful woman, ARTHA MARGARETHA. This is so far the greatest blessings that I have in all of my life. The second blessings, we have decided to move to Korea to continue my study. This was a very hard decision for us, because moving to Korea means we have to start everything all over again and we don't have anything to start with, we only have faith. And God works through our faith, not only we have enough to start and continue our live here in Korea, but we have more than enough. God provide amazing ways and miracles for us here, and a lot of things that never came in to our mind happened here. Before we came here, my grandpa said "Don't pray to ask God for blessings but ask God to provide the blessings". Now I understand what he said. The third blessings for this year is my wife is pregnant with a baby boy. That means next year there will be three of us celebrating new year.
These are only some of the blessings that we have this year, there are a lot of other countless blessings and miracles that God has provided. And next year I already know one thing that God has provided me to start with, which is hope. And I believe there will be a lot of wonderful things and miracles that are waiting for us to be reached.

Therefore you don't need to install anything and you don't have to worry about compatibility issue. Have you ever that as a Christians you have trouble in understanding the God's trinity. You know the concept of atom, atom is eternity, cannot be created and cannot be destroyed. And another thing is that, Atom consist of three things Nucleus, Electrons and Protons. Three things in one. This concept is strangely believable even though we've never seen one before. But we know its existence because of its properties.
Just like our God. He is eternal, cannot be created and cannot be destroyed. And the concept of trinity, God the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit. We've never seen God before physically, but we can see his works and it's real. But yet some people have some problems in understanding this rather than understanding Atom.
Maybe the only difference is that , we can control atom but we cannot control God. And maybe that's what makes some people hard to understand God. But you know we never will understand him by thinking. We could understand him by knowing Him and be close to Him. You can only use your heart to understand God.

Spring and Autumn are the best season throughout the year, cause it is not so hot and it is not so cold. After a very hot summer, now autumn is coming. The temperature now decreasing below 20 centigrade day time, and it can reach up to 5 degrees at night. Now people are dressing up with thick shirt or jacket. The best part is that the trees are now colorful cause they are changing color to yellow, red, and some are still green.
Anyway, enough for the weather report. Yesterday I went for a conference. And for some reasons during spring and autumn almost all over Korea have conferences. I think there's a season also for that. The conference is related to my project and our project leader was the chairman of one session in that conference. Most of the presenter are from Japan, and some are from Korea. It was an interesting conference and a good experience for me.

These days have been very busy for me. Since the beginning of the new fall semester I started with a new project on Silicon Carbide processing for mainly structural applications. This project was pioneered by the Korean atomic research center and involving many research centers and Universities. Our parts is to develop a high density SiC/SiC fiber composite. This is a long period of project. The whole project will be for 10 years (or more) but for our case we have to be able to come out with a result in 4 years.
Now all my days are full with experiment, report, and classes. Its kinda boring actually, but with those activities time goes very fast. Next two weeks will be mid-term week, have to concentrate fully then...hwaiting....

It's been 6 years since the 11th September tragedy struck the world. I myself was quite shocked and can't believe that it happened. I was still studying in Singapore at that time, but my dad is in the US and I was worried about him, even though he did not stay in New York. But because it was like a war, I was quite worried. However nothings happened.
At this day 6 years ago, history change and the world views upon terrorism was changed. I hope this tragedy will still be the largest terrorism tragedy and no other will follow. This should remind us to love our family, those who we know and those surround us more...

Mac crash II

After my Powerbook harddisk crash two days ago, finally today I got it back from Apple store. As I said before in my last post, I have to pay 150.000KRW to replace it to 80Gb since the original 40Gb is no longer in production. To my surprise, instead of replacing it with 80Gb they replace my harddisk to 120Gb. They said it is "service". Here in Korea "service" means something extra or free things. It is very normal here, if you come often to a shop or the seller wants you to be a regular customer, they will give something extra or something for free. So now my Powerbook is running with 120Gb harddisk, which means more space for my songs, pictures and movie...

Remember the movie "Minority Report", where tom cruise browsing a computer database with his hands. Well I think soon it is going to happen, I predict in the next two decades it will be on our houses, just like today's computer. Currently Microsoft and Apple is trying to develop this type of computer called the "Multi-touch".
Apple had already came up with Multi-touch products, like the iPhone and the new iPod-touch. Now both Apple and Microsoft is also developing their prototype design on Multi-touch computer, Microsoft named it "Micorsoft surface" and Apple with "Rosie Coffee Table". As predicted and talked about before, yesterday 5th of September Apple come with an amazing product..again..This time, people predictions are finally right, the new iPod came with a full 3.5-inch widescreen display with multitouch features. The design is really exactly the replicate of iPhone, maybe this is one way apple want to satisfy their customer especially to those country which we do not have iPhone yet, just like here in Korea. So with the new iPod touch-iPhone like design people can actually feel how great this design is. But what I don't get is the price and the capacity. The higher iPod touch capacity is only 16Gb, which is slightly more expensive than the iPod classic which has 10 times more capacity. However, we can't see the white distinct Apple iPod anymore in the iPod line-up.And the other great thing is the iPod nano update, with the video capability. For my self I'm interested with the iPod classic 80Gb, its slightly expensive than the 8Gb iPod nano, and cheaper than the 8Gb iPod-touch and we get an 80Gb of iPod with video, photo and music capability....

Mac crash

Yesterday my powerbook crashed and I cannot went in to the OS. I don't know why it is so sudden, I was pissed off and desperate...then I decided to re-install the OS. To my surprise, I cannot find my hard disk. I checked in the disk utility, and there it is...an error message showing that there is an error with the S.M.A.R.T system, I don't even know what "S.M.A.R.T" is. I can't do anything with my hard-disk, I can't even erase or format it.

Today I went to apple center down town. After they inspected, they said the hard disk need to be replaced. Well, after 4 years and 1 month since I purchased this laptop, finally the hard-disk crashed...

Anyway since I don't have any budget to buy a new one, I have to spent almost 150.000KRW/150USD to replace my 40Gb hard disk. However since they do not produce the 40Gb anymore, I have to change it to 80Gb...well there goes my plan to buy a new 20inch widescreen monitor

Temperature drop

As my last post said, "Fall is not yet falling", this week the temperature suddenly drops with a lot of rains..the temperature drop from 35 deg centigrade above to as low as 20 deg centigrade at night..now we have to close our window at night without aircon. And we have to turn on the heater to take shower..I think the temperature will be like this all the way to november and keep decreasing until winter..I love the weather now...

Now it's already end of August, but the temperature is keep on rising instead of falling. Fall should be starting by now, but there's no sign of it yet. In day time the temperature can go up to 35-38 degree centigrade, and night time its always above 28. We need to use hat, sunglass and sometimes umbrella. I think here is hotter than Jakarta. Well the fall semester is coming next week, I hope the semester will be as hot as the weather..what am I talking about...

New iLife and iWork..iLike

Along with the introduction of new iMac, Apple introduce the new iLife and iWork 08. As we already familiarize with iLife lovely function, Apple introduce and enhancement on this home creative application suite. The one that I love the most is the new iPhoto with its new "events" grouping, it makes me easier to group my photo collection without having to make new album all the time. So now you can have your album automatically done by the iPhoto, thats the reason you have a computer in the first place right....The next best thing is the "skimming", where you can browse through your photos in the events, with just hovering your mouse on the event photo. Its awesome....
The next best one and the completely changed is the iMovie, too bad I cannot get hands on, because it require mac with G5 or Intel, and I cannot use it with my Powerbook G4. But if I see the demo, it is really awesome and easier to make a movie. Apple claim that with the new iMovie you can make your own movie in less than 30 minutes...
iWork,...hmmm..I'm not really a fan of iWork since I mostly use my Microsoft office on my mac. But now mac has its own spreadsheet-excell look a like-called "numbers". Now the iWork line is completed with Keynote, Pages and now Numbers.

The all new iMac

Well finally after some speculation, today the new iMac is here and already on the shelf of apple online store. And surprisingly it is already available in apple store worldwide, well I only check the US, Singapore and Korean online store. Therefore the old white iMac is obsolete, and replaced by this new (not so new in terms of the design) aluminum-Apple cinema display look a like-iMac. The only difference with the cinema display, in terms of appearance, is the black -borderline surrounding the 20 and 24-inch display. Yes, there is no more 17-inch iMac, the only choice you have are the 20 and 24-inch with 2 different configuration, so you have 4 iMac options if you are thinking of shopping. The other noticeable difference is the black rear appearance which is made with environmental friendly, recyclable, black SiO2. Now apple goes green...
There is no surprise in the overall design, its like a modified white iMac with a new casing, maybe it is difference when I finally see the real thing. Maybe we can call it the iMac-i. But I love the new-apple macbook look a like-keyboard. It is so thin, and beautiful, and the wireless one is definitely awesome. However, the new keyboard is in aluminum shade, compliment the new iMac, but the mighty mouse is still white. is Apple going to come out with another new aluminum-shade mouse?

The iMac has been revolutionize the desktop computer industry. It is not only about the clock speed but also about the beauty. You don't wanna have a bunch of useless box on your desk right?well not me...iMac has the beauty inside out. From the first colorful iMac, to the toilet bowl, till the latest flying screen iMac, all has their own charm. My favorite is always the second generation of mac, the toilet bowl (the middle on picture above). I love the hinge where you can simply touch and push the screen to swivel it to your preference, and the way the cd-drive opening...:P...cute... I felt the latest iMac is too simple. According to some rumours, Apple is going to come out with a new iMac, and I really hope they come out with another eye-catching design.

You know I never appreciate ice cream until now. I'm actually not a big fan of ice cream, and so does any other sweet stuff like chocolate, sweets and so on. However in this kind of weather, ice cream is really perfect. Jakarta is also hot, but i don't know why, here in Korea it seems hotter. The heat is different, there's almost no wind outside. If you see the trees, they are not moving at all...and you cannot stop sweating every time. But this is definitely the best weather to eat ice cream....yummy...

Yesterday I add one more advance featured software for my mac. It is called A pple "frontrow". Well basically this feature is a shortcut feature to all your media in your mac. With this shortcut you can view you music in iTunes, you photo in iPhoto, your movies collection in iMovie and view your favorite DVD with DVD player. It is a media extravaganza experience in your own computer. If you have the new mac products, like Macbook, iMac, or Mac mini, this software is built-in in your devices. But for my PowerBook G4, I have to installed this manually. And since I don't have an infra-red receiver in my PowerBook, I have to use a keyboard shortcut to activate it. I can also use my Treo to activate it using the built in bluetooth in my PowerBook and a Salling Clicker software for full wireless control. Hmmm..SallingClicker is one of the best 3rd party application in mac, maybe I will post my experience using SallingClicker. Oh ya..in case you are wondering how can I install frontrow and use it in my PowerBook???That's for me to know, for you to find out..I guess you should figure it out by googling....:D

Welcome to the future - Mac OS Leopard

Yesterday I tried the new un-released Mac OS Leopard. It has not been released in the market yet...where did i get it?you don't want to know where did I get it. Anyway, I'm still using my old PowerBook G4 867MHz to load the Leopard. Apple has not released the spec requirement yet for leopard but some speculations says that the minimum processor recommended is 800Mhz which makes my PowerBook almost fall of the edge. The video RAM recommended is 32Mb or more which makes my machine write on the edge. The first impression that I get from the new Leopard, is slow. Of course it is slow, cause I think my machine is not powerful enough to run such a huge OS. Especially when I browse the new finder cover-flow, it opens every documents that you pass through which makes my 640Ram roaring like crazy. But I like the new desktop look with the transparent top bar and the new reflective dock. And also the new feature call spaces, which I think its similar to expose but instead of the windows, you can expose the whole screen. All in all, I think there are so much leopard function that I can't fully use in my machine, so I guess I will stick to my Tiger for now. And maybe if I get a new machine, I will use the new Leopard...A new 15inch PowerBook will be a very nice accessories for my desk...hehehe...

Especially when you know that virtual store's price is cheaper than what they sell in the un-virtual store, and there are so much interesting and tempting ads. Sometimes you just stop buy and look at one ad, but in the end you end up with buying things that you don't really need.
Many advantages you can get by shopping online, in spite 0f the fact that it makes you have lesser social life and the addiction phenomenon. One of it, you can reduce your traveling time and cost. You can jump from shop to shop by a simple click and your feet won't feel any fatigue. You can compare prices for one item in different stores and choose the cheapest one, without having to argue or bargain on the price, but remember to add the delivery cost. You can also avoid meeting some annoying shop keeper, whom you can't understand any words they are saying (well maybe this is only in my case). And you can do all this anytime, in your comfort office desk or your home computer.
Some tips for effective online shopping:
1. Always know what you are buying. Don't browse through un-important thing cause you will end up buying things that you don't need.
2. If you have the items you want, check out different store or seller also. They might have different price or might have some bonus for your purchases.
3. Look at the seller history or record. A good record seller is always better, however if you are stuck with a non-rated seller, you can try by being the first buyer.
4. Don't be tricked with the interesting pictures or misleading pictures. Always check the materials quality of the items you want to buy. Make sure you know the size.
5. Re-check the item list that you want to buy before carrying to the payment. Check the quantity, the item number, the color or other options.
6. Re-check the price of items. Also check the delivery terms, is it for free, included in the price or you have to pay once the items are delivered. For non-expensive stuff, sometimes the delivery cost can be more expensive than the items cost.
7. When doing the payment, make sure you are in a secure website or trusted webpage and it has security features that you can trust. As a pre-cautions, always clean your history and cache once you've done your purchase. And also check your Email for confirmation that your purchase is successful.(For a safer method, do it in a mac...hehehe....)
8. Always check the delivery schedule and make sure you are there to receive the items, or at least someone there to receive your items. Delivery man sometimes can be cruel if they found out no body at home.
9. When you receive the items, normally it is nicely wrapped in a box. Make sure you get the right items and the right color or whatever that match your receipt. If it is an electronic stuff, make sure that it is working accordingly and it has a warranty.
10. If you are satisfied, maybe you can leave some testimony to the seller. Or if you are not satisfied you can always leave a bad comment...:D

Apple is opening itself again to the Windows world, after iPod, iTunes and Bootcamp, now its time for mac users favorite browser come to the Windows world, the "Safari". Even though it is still in beta version, but now Windows user can get to know more to the Apple world. Well you have to open your windows to let the apple in and taste how sweet the apple is...hehehehe...
Apple claim Safari is much faster compare to IE, Firefox and Opera in Windows environment. However since it is still in beta version, there are still some bugs and incompatibility. For now, I'm still using my Firefox browser for my PC. But still I think its great that Safari has finally come to Windows. Now, I'm wondering will Jobs later release an iLife-Windows version? I really doubt it..but who knows...

Nono defense thesis

Finally my lab-mate Nono, my lab-mate, has done his thesis defense. The thesis defense was so frightening and I can feel the stress atmosphere during Nono's thesis presentation. And the best part was when the all the professors starts to asked questions. The interesting part was all the questions was so wide and general, so they have to understand about their presentation deeply. But overall its all done for Nono, my turn will be 1.5years later from now.
After the presentation we went for a dinner in a chinese restaurant. Well this is new, since all this while we always eat in Korean restaurant. But the chinese food there was already like Korean food.

Foleo has the form of a laptop but the function of a palmtop. Curios???what will this product do? But the great thing about this is the instant on and off, where on means on and off means off. So you don't have to spend time on booting your computer and worry that it does not turned off properly, and you can also save your battery life with this feature.
It's basically a basic computing device with a focus of mobility. It's features includes; 5-hours of battery capacity, built in wifi and bluetooth, usb port, vga port, sd card reader..and it runs on linux based OS. And for the feature and size, it comes with a much cheaper price compare to the same business portable laptop. Its a great way for palm to put its product to a market without a bloody war, or you may called it a blue-ocean strategy.

For you guys living in outside Indonesia, and miss home. Well maybe this will make you closer to home. Now you can watch Indonesian channel for free...yes i mean for free. Thanks to the Streaming TV technology. This new program called indline, this new, so called Indonesian based company is trying to make a all-in-one internet based media, with all the feature such as Email, chatting, web browser, word processing and entertainment in a single program. However it is still in beta version. Anyway, now you can stream 2 channels, Metro TV and Trans TV (I think indline have to pay me now...^-^). Well at least you can watch the news everyday now and also Extravaganza...hehehehe...

Well actually you can find a lot of Indonesian movie or TV program in youtube. The most favorite channel will be TUKUL-Empat mata.
Anyway, there are actually many streaming TV website nowadays. For example, tvants.com , a Chinese based website, is one options that you can try if you like sports or Chinese channel.

Teacher's Day and Yeungnam 60th Anniversary

Yesterday was Teacher's day and also the celebration of Yeungnam's 60th Anniversary. Me and my lab-mate bought a flower and some gifts (Vitamin C drinks)for my professor for the teacher's day. Me and my Korean class-mate also bought a flower for our Korean Teacher. I don't have any pictures on my Professor's gifts, however I have some picture taken with our Korean Teacher's gifts. I went with my friend Iyus to buy the flower for my Korean Teacher. Well we have some problem, because we are only beginners in Korean. However we managed to bought it with a bargain price and it was the exact amount of our budget. Our Korean teacher was very surprised to receive the bouquet. One of our Korean classmate , Sherif, brought a flower and a egypt-like picture. We also write a "Happy teacher's day" on the White-board in 8 different languages.
After the Korean class i went and watched the Yeungnam's 60th anniversary celebration. There was a huge stage in front of the main building and there were some singer and dancer on the stage. There are also fireworks.

This Weekend I went downtown. But actually I kinda lazy cause my friends wanna go there just for shopping and sight seeing. But since they told me there are a festival in downtown, so I decided to go. But when we get there, the festival was not so fantastic as the name. There was a lot of people but not much to see, only some booth selling some stuff and there is this stage, but I also dunno whats on that stage. Finally we decided to watch Spiderman 3. We get on the queue, and luckily there are 4 studios playing Spiderman 3 that day. So we get the ticket and watch it.
I really like the movie, a lot of actions and also Korean-drama like story. Its really thrilling and exciting to watch it. And I believe there is going to be the next Spiderman4, and I'm guessing Venom will still be in the next episode.
Anyway, its kinda expensive to watch a movie in this city. I have to pay 7000won(Rp. 70,000) for a movie, thats like twice of Jakarta's rate. And i have to say, the cinema quality is better in Jakarta. Next must watch movie will be Transformer, i think this will be a great one too. And I also see a commercial on the next Die Hard 4. Well so much to see....

Repentance

Maybe sometime we have some questions, why does Christians even though they have already repent still fall in to sin?Maybe this is also the reason why we do not want to be a true Christian, because we afraid we will make sin again if we decide to be a true Christian. Well...if we decide to be a true Christian, it does not mean that the devil will not be there anymore. The devil will still be there, and even it will attack you more. But remember that at that time we have a greater strength in God.
David made more sin compare to Saul. David were an adulterer, he killed, but still he is still a man after God own heart. Its because David knew how to get back to God's feet when he made a mistake. And when David made a sin, he came back to God with a broken heart. David was a very passionate and emotional man to God, but it was not because he is born like that, it was because of his Love to God. David would weep if he made a mistake and He would dance if we win from war. Being Christian is not only to be cheering and dancing but also about weeping. Without brokenness we cannot feel God, and sometime if we are too strong, in our self centered, our own power, our intelligence, our wealthiness and all things that made us have pride shell surrounded our life, God will break that so that we can again feel God. So don't let our pride block God's power and grace, remember that we are nothing before God.

Today is the last day for our Korean-sensengnim Ms. Ikapnam Farewell to Ms. Ikapnam-이갑남 to be in the class.Next month she will leave Korea for china to teach Korean to the Chinese. So we arrange a little farewell party for our teacher.
Yesterday we; me, Sherif (Egyptian), Fangliang(Chinese) and Andrea(Australian), went to the local supermarket, E-mart, to get some snacks and beverages for the party. We also went to get some gifts for our teacher. It took us sometime to decide what gifts to get, but Andrea's friend has an idea to get a tea set. So we finally decide to get a tea-set and also a set of flavored tea. Andrea also bought a pair of spoon from Jinju.
The party was held 5pm today, before our 6 o'clock class. But we end up with no class today. Tomorrow the new teacher will come.
I wish Ms. Ikapnam a happy life and success in China.

Yonsei's Conference and PERPIKA Conference

Last weekend I went to Seoul to attend a Ceramic Conference in Yonsei University-Seoul. We took KTX-train from Dong-Daegu and we reach Seoul in 1.5 hours. Well...the train run 300km/hours. We arrive in Yonsei around 10am and directly attend the conference. Nono present his Poster and Kwon did oral presentation for his paper.
The next day I went out with Dr. Yaya around Yonsei and Seoul. Dr Yaya (or Kang Yaya) is one amazing man who dedicate his life in Biotech science and was awarded as Korean Honorary citizen for his works.
On Sunday We went to Indonesian Embassy to attend PERPIKA Congress. Well Finally I met a lot of fellow students here, and I got a change to meet my High School senior Capt. Faishal Ridwan, who is taking MBA currently in Korea.
Cool weekend overall...

Virginia Tech Shooting

33 people died, and most of the victims are student, in the shooting incident in Virginia Tech University by a Korean National Student. Most of the news confirm that the shooter was a loner and some said he was a weird student. Even President bush in his speech said to reach out to those who are away from family and those who are lonely. Unofficial issue said that there is one Indonesian PHD student killed in the incident. Actually this kind of tragedy happened in my high school days. It was kinda tragic I guess. I hope we can also be aware more to our environment and cheer up those beside us. Deep condolences to the victims and family.

IPDN or used to be called STPDN is one Indonesian institution or school to educate future government leader. I believe most of you have heard about the news spread all over Indonesian media last week. However this is not new actually. For those who haven't read the news you can read at liputan6 or Jakarta Post(English). Basically this non-military institution use military way to educate their student. And the result is brutality. The Jakarta Post even called IPDN as The Killing Field Institution. It is recorded at least 10 victims are killed in this institution. Is it because of the system or is it because of some irresponsible element? Well maybe you can let me know your opinion...

Happy Easter

Today is easter, but I can't see anything special here in Korea. Good Friday and Easter is not a public holiday here in Korea. But still we have to remember that today is a very special day for human kind, because on this day Jesus Himself died in the cross 2000 years ago to save the world from sin, sickness and any bondages.
Easter message today in the church was very interesting. A question of why Jesus, on the day he was crossed in calvary, did not come down and kill all the soldiers (Mat 27:29-41). And even the soldiers said that, if Jesus can came down from that cross and release himself, they will believe in Him. And I think, why shouldn't He came down and show them so that they can believe Him. It was not that He lost his authority or it was not that He can't order the angels to attack all the soldiers and came down from the cross. On that calvary, it was not the soldier feeling sorry for Jesus live but it was actually Jesus who felt sorry for the soldiers live. Maybe if Jesus came down from that cross, the whole Israel believe in Him on that day. But He chose to die on that cross so that people all around the world can believe Him and can feel His sacrifice and LOVE for us. He died on that cross to set us free from our sin and so that we can live.

Today after attending my lab-mate presentation, my professor and all the lab gank went out and have a meal together. We had our dinner in one Korean restaurant behind our campus. We ate raw-fish, Korean Sashimi-like delicacies.

Hwangsa - 황사 , is this yellow sand storm from China that cause fog like weather in Korea. It is today that I first experience it, and even I don't even know what hwangsa means before. Today morning the weather looks great, its kinda cold but its great with the bright sun. But at about 3 o'clock this morning it turns out that it is a bit cloudy, i guess. But there's this horrible scent that feels like dust blocking your nose. And it actualy do dust which is hovering over the air. When i looked at the window, the area was like surrounded by fog, but it is more dangerous than fog, cause its dusts. I think I need to stay more indoor this time, thanks God it didn't happen yesterday or else the Spring Festival will be ruin.

Today I've learned a lot from this Sunday service.

-Trying and training
Faith is not about trying things that God told us to do, is not trying what God wants with us, but its about training to be what God wants us to be. The pastor take a an example of a Marathon Athlete, we all can have the will of becoming one, and with a strong will and faith inside of us, all of us can try to run the marathon and finish it. But if we train hard, we can be even better than only trying. Trying will only bring how far we can go, but training will bring us to where we want it to be. Becoming a God's people is not trying to be like Jesus, but to train ourself so that we can be like Jesus.

-Knowing Him and learning Him
One thing that we can do to become like HIM is not learning HIM, but knowing HIM. The pastor take an example, if he(the pastor) send a letter to one of us, and start reading and learning the content of the letter by learning the meaning of the pastor's name and looking the meaning of each word in the dictionary or in a encyclopedia, in the end we will feel tired and knowing nothing about the content. But what we need to do is to read, and experience HIM in our live. So its about knowing HIM and invite HIM in our live

-Busyness and hurry
our live is full with work, study and all things that makes us to be in a hurry in all things. Sometimes in our spiritual live, we all feel the same, we all doing things that we think that is what God whats us to do. We need to have our quite time and have quality times with HIM. We can all be busy but still we can have quality time, but we cannot be in a hurry but have a quality time. Therefore be busy and not be hurry.
(PS: I just realize, does the word business comes from the word "busy-ness"???)

Spring festival

Last Saturday, I went to the Spring festival in campus. Its a celebration of the coming spring season. Now I understand why people celebrate spring, because spring is where we can go out without a thick coat, its where the sun shine but still we feel warm, and also it is where the Sakura/cherry blossom/Pot kot blossom. And what I was wondering why all these Koreans also taking pictures with all these Sakura?I thought its only foreigners or people like me taking pictures. Well to my surprise, the sakura flower only blossom for about 2-3weeks during spring in a year. So it is a rare moment to have this. And in my campus also there is this road called the LOVE road, where along this road, you can see Sakura on your left and right side. Its a great weekend overall...

Last weekend I went to downtown Daegu with my schoolmate. This is my second time after my long lost journey 2 weeks ago. Last saturday was quite cloudy but the weather was great cos it was not so cold anymore. Now I can go out without my thick jacket. The journey takes about 40min from campus. We stop at Hanil Theater bus stop. It was weekend so it was crowded there. And I found so many familiar shops around there, they have starbucks, McD, my old time fav Burger King, Pizza Hut, and even an Indonesian "Warung".
Well I guess Korea is not bad after all. And the best thing is the sakura now starting to flourish. I think in about 2 more weeks the view will be beautiful here. I LOVE Spring....

BBQ Dinner

Last night, me and my lab-mate had a special dinner together with my Professor and his family. We went to a small restaurant behind our campus. Nothing special with the restaurant, its just an ordinary Korean restaurant which they don't have chairs. The main menu last night was Pork BBQ with some vegetables and of course Kim-chi. I kinda like the BBQ, mixed with soya sauce and some chili. One of my lab-mate who can't eat pork , Nono, ate fried chicken and chili chicken.
After we had our dinner, we went to our professor house. The house is a typical flat apartment, just like in Singapore. But the interior design is very much different, Korean style. The house is very comfort and so tidy. My Professor have a son and a daughter, they are look very cute. I'm guessing they are still below 5 years old. The younger daughter, was very cute. She likes me very much, and she sat on my lap almost all time. We were playing with her stuffed animals, and she also asked me to lay hide and seek. But I couldn't understand what she was saying at all...hahahaha..and also my Proff's wife make a very delicious cookies...

Today I got an encouragement words from one of my Colleague back in Hempel Indonesia, Mr. Jun Tabia. He said, ""if you are in Rome, do what the Romans do". In countries like Korea and Japan, English is not really a popular language. They prefer to use their own language even when they know they are actually talking to foreigners like myself. Another problem is that they have their own set of letters, so it completes all, I cannot converse with them and also cannot read their writing. So I can only depends on body language, back to the stone-age language...hahahhaha...
One time, I asked a bus going to Gyeongsan and to my surprise they also have Gyeongsang, and they are far apart. What I did is, I ask for the price, and make sure I went to the right direction.
I guess Pak Jun was right, I have to do what the romans do for me to survive in Rome. Therefore I took Korean Class. I know its gonna be difficult, but I have to do it.

Today is white day in Korea. What in the world is "White Day"???? White day is a valentines day for men in Korea. In this occasion instead of women receiving flowers and chocolate, men will receive gifts from women. So it's the reverse of 14th February valentines day. The date is exactly one month after which is 14th March. According to Wikipedia, this event was found in 1965 and now has been celebrated mainly in Korea, Japan and Hongkong and maybe other parts of the world. In Korea itself the usual present is candies. Well, it's kinda funny when you see man receive a bouquet of flower, isn't it?

Weekend= Hiking + Eat Topoki

Not that kinda weekend where I normally go to mall, shopping, eating etc. This weekend, I was on a group trip hiking on a mountain which has a lot of Buddha statue. Some people actually climbing not to exercise but to pray to the statues, it was like 2.5hours hiking and it was cold and steep. After hiking we went to one villa and spent a night and enjoy pork barbecue dinner.
On Saturday night, I went to eat Topoki, a traditional Korean food. Its kinda tasty, spicy and warm...great to eat on cold days like this...

Another plane crash

This year started with a terrible accident of Adam Air missing in Kalimantan-Sulawesi water. And just this morning the (Supposedly) best Air Transport Operator in Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, have another accident in Yogjakarta. This Boeing 737-400 airplane crash while landing in Yogyakarta's Adi Sucipto Airport. This add to one more bad mark in the Indonesians transportation history. If last time most people trying to reduce their air travel by budget airlines and took Garuda Indonesia even though it is more expensive, now I don't know who we can trust to travel by air in Indonesia. I think the government should really consider to make a strict rules on air transport. And air transport operator should really take care of their flight carrier.

Lost in Translation

The first time i really felt lost. Where everything surrounds me can't understand what I'm talking about, and where everything surrounds me look so unfamiliar. Sometimes we need to understand that we are not the only one who exist in this world and not everything that we do or understand is similar to others. I just realize that there are more out there that I haven't seen and there are more out there that are need to be explored.
Am I up to this challenge, am I ready to let go and come out from my comfort zone. I guess no body knows...Only God can answer my question and I believe He will guide me through this.

My last day in Hempel

Today is my last day in Hempel Indonesia. So far I have learn and experience a lot of thing in Hempel. Overall Hempel is a good company, but I see a more brigther future outside Hempel. Well there's alot of thing that I want to share about working in Hempel, like tax issue, salary issue, the Indonesian finance manager issue, Singapore HR manager issue...and alot of thing..but it is all in the past and I want to start a new beginning.

I believe God has a more beutiful plan for me and guide me through my ways. I will update again next week on my new challanges....

The new TREO 680 have finally announced by PALM. The new TREO finally come without the disturbing studded antenna. Its designs appear better compare to the TREO 700p/w. However the spec is still under the 700 series, palm refer this as budgetted smart phone. Compared to Treo 650, the 680 has better memory, more interesting design and some updates in the sorftware, no Wifi or GPS integrated yet though. It has the same screen resolution (320x32) and also VGA integrated camera.
Palm has done a great job with eliminating the antenna, however alot of things still can be improved. I'm hoping a palm device with no antenna; built in Wifi, GPS, Radio; and maybe with hard disk. Still I love what Palm has done with the colorful treo. Bravo....

I just bought this album the other day, and one of the songs bring blessings to me. It is called "Sampai" or "Until" in English. This song describe how God's love is beyond measure and how it cannot be replaced by anything. You might want to check it out your self. Great song and Great album by GMB.

New Apple Gadgets

Yesterday was the reveiling of some new apple gadgets by Steve Jobs. However it is not as great as what I expected to be. There's no iPhone and there's no brand new gadgets intorduced. Most of the gadgets introduced are an updates from previous edition. Some of them are iPod nano 2nd gen, iPod shuffle 2nd gen, iPod video (5.5 gen, not much updates really) and iTV (an upgrade of airport express). Not really impressive really....

Birthday

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me...hehehhe...do you like that song?don't you think that when people sang that song to you means that you are getting old. Well, for me it is actually a celebration that on 9th September 26 years ago i was born in this world. One pastor at church once said, that we all that born in this world was a winner. He said that among thousands of sperms trying to attached to the egg, we are the only one who can make it and the rest are dead. Its like entering a university where you have to fight with lots of students to enter and finally there's only one winner. Therefore we are actually born as a winner and we need to be grateful and maintain that attitude.

Anyway, on my birthday I got a special gift from my girlfriend, Artha Margaretha. It was a bluetooth headset, Nokia BH- 700. It is an awesome gadget and I love it so much. It was so special not because of the value, but she gave it to me really special, and i was all surprise when she gave me the present.
The next day, I went together with my family to have my dinner celebration at Ny. Suharti Restaurant in Rawamangun. It was a fun weekend altogether.

Oh yeah I almost forget, Pak Yudhoyono (Indonesian President) is also having his birthday on the same day as my birthday. Happy Birthday also to Pak SBY, may God bless you in running this country. Oh ya, not to forget also that 9th of Sept is also a National Sports Day in Indonesia..hahahaha...

Rumours - Apple iPhone

Rumors that will make all apple fans drooling...yes it is the iPhone. For me personally if apple came out with this, I will definitely want to have one. The rumors in gizmodo.com says that apple will reveal some new products on this 12th Sept including the most anticipated iPhone. Well cross your finger and hope that jobs done a good job. Some rumors say that the phone will be designed like the picture above, which is a combination of ipod design with phone functionality. Some rumours also say that apple will join with palm to produce the OS for the phone. Well in anyway, I believe it will be a great product. For me I would prefer a white, ipod designed, touch screen apple phone...that would be awesome...
